Sake

Hello! My name is Sake.

Story goes I was born in a barn in New York—eventually rescued by Second Chance Adoption. At only three months old, I was the last kitten with my mom, and I was adopted by my new dad, Stanton.

I am originally from New York, but have lived in five states. I spent the first few years of my life in Vermont, Virginia and Pennsylvania. After living on the East Coast for a few years, I realized I prefer the warmer climate. In 2015 I went on the most epic road trip across the country from Pennsylvania to California. We spent about two weeks traveling in the car and staying in hotels getting to see the country together.

I spent about 5 years in Northern California up until the Pandemic hit—that’s when we moved to Stanton’s home state of Arizona in 2020. We lived with his Aunt and Uncle during the early pandemic days. Aunt Nancy and Uncle Paul have been just as involved in my life as my dad. After a half year living together, dad made a decision to move to Red Rock Country, Sedona Arizona.

I am one of three cats in the house. My younger brother Bailey and I are bonded like bookends—fifteen years of synchronized naps, mutual grooming, and silent guard duty. Our youngest brother, Amare, is still learning the rhythm and earning his stripes as we tune the band into a true trio.

When the weather is nice, my brothers and I get to play outside—under close adult supervision. I love going outside and soaking in the sunshine and eating some fresh grass. I love to hunt and chase birds, lizards, chipmunks and squirrels. I’ve even been on a couple of walks around the block. I’m an indoor kitty, but outdoors with dad is so much fun!

Dad likes to share as much of the Sedona energy with us as he can. We touch Earth for anti-inflammatory benefits, take CBD a couple of times a week, drink clean spring-fed water, and eat only the healthiest dry and wet foods like Science Diet, Instinct Raw and Wellness. We eat chicken, salmon, rabbit and duck. We get high-protein treats all the time—Greenies are my favorite though. Dad likes to hide our treats around the house so we have to hunt for them—it keeps me active and curious.

Since adoption, I have moved around a lot, met a few interesting humans and other animals, and added a couple of pretty cool brothers to the family along the way. Today, I’m happy to say I’ve always been well taken care of, spoiled, safe and comfortable with a roof over my head at the end of every day.

Sake was adopted on January 6th 2010 and I’m proud to say he’s now 16 and thriving.

When I adopted Sake, I remember saying I wanted a cat who would sit on my lap while I watched sports—and that’s exactly who Sake is, and so much more. Because he was the first and oldest, he’s always been the Alpha in the house. He can act tough, but he’s the coolest, smartest cat, and he knows me better than I know myself.

Growing up, my family never had cats. We had every kind of animal you can imagine from dogs, to birds, fish, turtles, even a pig! But never a cat. Because I grew up with dogs, I raised my cats in a similar manner. Just like dogs, Sake and his brothers always greet me at the front door when I get home. They will come to me when I whistle or call their names—they each have their own special whistle. And Sake is a very special cat.

Sake and I are the same kind of soul: lovers of cat naps and quiet time. Most nights he migrates onto me, a paw or whisker touching—his little nudge saying I’m here. And yet, like me, he treasures his solitude. As much as he seeks that nose-to-chest closeness at bedtime, he’s just as happy to slip off and be his own cat when the mood strikes. He is needy and independent all at once—and so am I. And that’s our purr-fect rhythm.

Sake was the first cat in my life (and my family’s). Today, we have three cats, a beagle and a desert tortoise in the family. I’ve learned that I am definitely a cat guy. I love cats! I think they are the best pets. But I’ve also learned that cats are way more than just animals or pets, they are family members. When you have a cat in your life for 15+ years, they truly become a part of the family.

There have always been more animals in my house than humans—I just might love animals more than people. And I finally realized this after having cats in my life. Sake and each of his brothers are registered as Emotional Support Animals. Sake and his brothers truly mean the world to me. I am so happy to have Sake in my life—he has changed my life and I couldn’t imagine a life without him.

At the time, I thought I was rescuing Sake—it turns out Sake rescued me.

We love you, Sake. 💙
